MUSIC TELEVISION

“Television shows like ‘Top Of The Pops’ are the epitome of shit. They hinder creativity, and supply where demand doesn’t exist, force feeding the public until the public won’t eat anymore. Music means nothing to the people who make such shows. Shows like that don’t play hit records - they’re paid by corporations to show records in the hope that they will become hits, and won’t show records by people who can’t pay up, which makes things rather difficult for a talented band or person to have a real, bona fide hit. Shows like ‘Top Of The Pops’ are run by old has-beens trying to tell kids what’s cool and what they should be listening to. While corporations like MTV try to convince you that a man like Ozzy Osbourne, who has been in a million television and recording studios, cannot operate a television remote control, the true ‘next big thing’ sweats and toils in a dirty garage. Shows like ‘Pop Idol’ and ‘American Idol’ don’t create idols - they create a copy of a copy of a copy, void of talent and originality, mediocre escapism. Rather than an idol made of gold, the viewing public are left with something that looks and tastes like tin. I’m sure at least one of the sorry souls who win ‘talent’ shows like this, lining the pockets of television producers with their own blood, will end his or her life with their own hands when the promise of immense wealth and eternal fame prove a facade. The people behind the scenes should feel ashamed of themselves, not just for ruining music and stunting the next genuine legend, but for destroying lives. These people have blood on both their hands and their money.”

Karl Steiger, 2006, a couple of months before it was announced that ‘Top Of The Pops’, the self-proclaimed “still number 1” music show, was being canceled after 42 years.

“I would never go on something like MTV Cribs. I’ll bet more American burglars watch that show than any other.”

Karl Steiger, 2008.
